Helldivers 2 burst into 2024 and is a huge success. Though I’ve already written a bunch of reviews about it, I still play Helldivers 2 every evening with my friends and enjoy every hour of the game. Helldivers 2 allows us to play both solo and in co-op with up to 4 players, but is Helldivers 2 crossplay?

Although the developers have already solved the server infrastructure problem and the main problems associated with matchmaking, networking issues with Helldivers 2 crossplay may still arise. Sometimes, it is not possible to join the same session if players are on different platforms, and the cross-progression feature, that had been removed. My friends and I also play on PS5 and PC, and we encounter bugs from time to time.

Before I describe a few possible solutions, please know that these are workarounds and not official solutions to the problem. Arrowhead stated on their official Discord that they are aware of the issues and are working to resolve them.

Solving The Helldivers 2 Crossplay Issue

• Try sending a friend request several times, cancelling the previous request, and sending a new one to a fresh friend code. See if the problem goes away.
• Check whether the problem is affecting just one or more of your friends by sending multiple requests to different friends.
• It’s also worth trying to restart the game, turning crossplay off and on in the game options, and sending or accepting a friend request again.

Bug Workarounds

If none of the options fix the problem and Helldivers 2 crossplay is not working, you can try the simple workaround below, which may help resolve the issue while you wait for a new patch.

1. You need to create an open lobby and ask all your friends to join it at the same time. If there are three or two of you, join the same existing mission that only has one player. 
2. Ask one player to start the mission, and the other three players immediately try to join in. In order for the other three players to see the host’s mission, they need to choose the same planet and the same difficulty as the host.
3. If a random player joins you, the host may kick them out of the mission. 
4. Once you all join, you will be grouped and can continue to complete missions together for the rest of the session.

One of Arrowhead’s community managers, Thomas “Twinbeard” Petersson, provided an update on the studio’s progress on crossplay bug testing and fixing. This bug prevented players from accepting friend requests from people on other platforms. Can You Play Helldivers 2 In Single-Player Mode?

Yes, as we’ve mentioned Helldivers 2 single player is available, but there are some caveats. Initially, the game was designed for you to play in co-op since there are a lot of enemies, and they are not so easy to deal with, especially when on high difficulties. So, Helldivers 2 is playable solo, without the help of other players, but in this case, the game will turn from an action into a stealth action for you. 

You will need to quickly run to the objective, do everything yourself, shoot at enemies along the way, and run away as soon as all the enemies in the area start running towards you. If you are a try-harder, you can even try to complete missions on high difficulties, as many Reddit community members did. There are videos on YouTube of how solo players complete missions on difficulty level 9, but, boy, it is definitely not easy to do. 

You can also start the mission solo and as soon as you feel that you can’t cope, you can enable the SOS beacon, and random players or your friends will join you to help. However, I simply must put a disclaimer here: the most spectacular and interesting way to play Helldivers 2 is in co-op. I know, I know, playing with other people can be tough, but what if you could find truly compatible teammates? Those that can really match your personality, and you’d be fully comfortable with. Sharing My Helldivers 2 Solo Experience

Playing Helldivers 2 solo is an interesting experience and a completely different type of gameplay for me. In the company of friends or even random people, it is a whirlwind action, where everyone is constantly shooting, calling stratagems, and killing their teammates more often than even bugs. But when playing alone, the game changes its focus towards stealth. 

Firstly, in the Helldivers 2 single-player mode, I have a much smaller number of respawns, so there is less room for error. Playing alone, I act secretly and avoid patrols and unnecessary firefights to complete the mission’s main task on time. This is especially true at 5-6 medium difficulty levels. At difficulties 7-9, you will no longer have enough normal damage to cope with a huge number of enemies.

Things I Liked

When playing alone, I constantly experience tension since I don’t have a friend to cover me, and I constantly look around so that no one accidentally sneaks up on me from behind. I also monitor the map to see from which side the enemies are attacking. I simultaneously complete the task, shoot back from the oncoming enemies, and quickly retreat as soon as the key goals are completed. A mixture of intense horror and stealth action can only be experienced when playing solo.

Things I Didn’t Enjoy Much

In the Helldivers 2 single-player mode, there is a feeling of limitation in firepower, and instead of simply strengthening enemies, the developers slightly nerf players’ favorite weapons, which makes it even more difficult to play alone. It’s a little depressing that there is practically nothing for a single player to do on difficulties above 6 since the problem will not be in the player’s skill but in the fact that their firepower will not be enough to cope with so many enemies. It will simply take you half the time to cope with one wave of bugs, and you may not have enough ammunition. In a cooperative mode, it will be a tense but rather ordinary skirmish. This limitation is currently the only reason why it doesn’t make much sense to play Helldivers 2 solo on difficulty above 6.

So, Is Helldivers 2 Fun Solo?

No, not so much. Helldivers 2 is not ideal for solo play. While it’s possible to enjoy the game alone, it’s designed for cooperative multiplayer. Solo players may find missions challenging and miss out on the chaotic fun of team coordination. The game’s core mechanics and atmosphere shine brightest when experienced with others.

Tips For Solo Gamers in Helldivers 2

While playing in co-op with friends or random players, you have a very extensive arsenal and a wide field for experimenting with the choice of equipment. When playing alone, you are somewhat limited since now the main emphasis will be on surviving, quickly completing the mission, and running away, so mobility and your survivability will be a priority. Here are some recommendations on how to play Helldivers 2 solo:

• Prioritize Shield Generator Backpack: The shield is a must-have, and you should take it to increase your survivability. While bugs mainly pose a threat at close range, all Automatons can shoot from a distance very accurately, so you shouldn’t meddle with robots without a shield.
• Utilize Support Assets: You need to effectively deal with armored enemies, so it would be a good idea to take the Orbital Railcannon Strike, which copes well with tanks and Automaton structures. Since the slot on your back will be occupied, you need a second weapon that will not require a backpack and will be powerful enough to also resist armored enemies, so here we will have Arc Thrower, Railgun, or Quasar Cannon.
• Exercise Stealth and Caution: It’s better to avoid any unnecessary skirmishes and enemy patrols and act covertly.
• Emphasize Speed and Efficiency: Land, quickly complete the main task, and fly away. First, you complete the main mission, and then, on the way to the extraction, you can complete several minor ones if you have time.
• Opt for Lightweight Armor: You should opt for light armor as you will run faster, and stamina will be consumed more slowly and will recover faster. You should also give preference to armor with a passive 50% chance of not dying when taking lethal damage.

How Does Matchmaking Work In Helldivers 2?

The first thing you need to do is go into options and set up matchmaking depending on how you want to play. If you’re going to run with friends only, then you should select Private mode. In this case, no one except your friends can enter your lobby. You can also select Public mode so that any player can join you at any time, provided there is a free slot. So, how to matchmake in Helldivers 2? Here’s what you need to do to choose your matchmaking type:

1. Open the Main Menu.
2. Navigate to the Options > Gameplay > Matchmaking Privacy.
3. Check that the Matchmaking Privacy is set to Public.

The Helldivers 2 game is a cooperative third-person shooter developed by the Swedish company Arrowhead and published by Sony. The Helldivers 2 price is $40, so it’s even cheaper than most games on the market. And it’s one of the factors that have made it so popular lately.

Let’s start this Helldivers 2 review with the main thing: this is the MOST successful game that Sony has published on the Windows platform to date. The game became a real phenomenon and made a splash not only on Sony consoles but also on Steam. The game is currently in first place in sales on Steam for the 4th week in a row (from February 27 to March 5, 2024). This is clearly not the limit, as the game continues to spread actively through word of mouth. The developers admitted that they did not expect such huge success and attention to the game, and now they are actively recruiting people and completely revising the content roadmap.

Me, along with all my GameTree friends and friends of friends, collectively dropped out of life after this release. Honestly, I can’t recall the last time a game of this caliber emerged. To play the Helldivers 2 game, we effortlessly carve out free time in our schedules, join the voice chat on GameTree, and indulge in marathon gaming sessions every weekend until the break of dawn. Trust me, for an adult and married man, it’s a big deal.

Graphics, Design, And Art Style

I remember well the moment when, during the mission’s loading, we looked at the screen and saw how our Space Marines flew on capsules to land on the planet. We tried to understand what it was about this game that captivated us all, and after a short pause, one of my friends said, “This is just a game that is very nice to play.” After that, in the voice chat, everyone said “yes” at the same time. A bit touchy-feely, I know, but I wanted to share this in my Helldivers 2 review. 

Indeed, while this is not the first or only cooperative shooter on the market, it has very nice and stylish graphics, and the planets have different atmospheres and landscapes. The game also has a very detailed design of not only your infantrymen but also robots and bugs, as well as all the smallest details and effects, from cartridges flying out of your weapons to hits on enemies. Helldivers 2 has well-implemented shooting, the feeling of shooting, the weight of the gun, and the spread of bullets.

Atmosphere And Story

The Helldivers 2 game takes place in the future. We act as soldiers in the service of Super Earth, a space-faring human state that is waging a galactic war against alien enemies. Super Earth’s opponents are the Terminid bugs and bloodthirsty robots Automatons. The game deliberately imitates the aesthetics of the movie Starship Troopers by Paul Verhoeven, where militaristic pathos and anti-war satire combine. Hell divers “spread democracy” and kill giant bugs and robots on their own planets “in the name of freedom.”

The game has a galactic map showing planets captured by bugs and robots. Also, in real-time, we can observe what percentage of the planet is captured or liberated and how many players are currently in the sector. A fun fact: the galactic map is not just controlled by a script, but the developers monitor it and, as gamemasters, decide whether to complicate life for the players and make robots or bugs even more deadly. Therefore, the situation changes dynamically with the participation of the developers themselves.

Solo or in the company of friends, you choose a mission on the planet and select equipment and a landing point. The main goal in the Helldivers 2 game is to complete the main mission on a huge map, simultaneously combating enemies and completing side missions. Then, you need to get to the evacuation point and defend until transport arrives. In addition to the main weapons, in the process of upgrading your ship, you will unlock various auxiliary equipment, as well as air support, called stratagems. They come in 4 types:

• Rocket launchers, grenade launchers, etc.;
• Various turrets and mines;
• Airstrikes – dropping bombs, napalm, etc.;
• Support from your ship, which is in low orbit – various massive bombardments, an orbital laser, and other destructive support that operates over a huge area.

In the near future, the developers also promise to add various ground vehicles and new gear.

Frankly speaking, there is not much variety in tasks, but the Helldivers 2 gameplay is so exciting that it really doesn’t matter that much. Mission maps are usually very large, and in addition to the main task, there are also many secondary ones.

Available Game Modes

The game has only one game mode — performing various PvE missions solo or in a co-op of up to four people. Is Helldivers 2-player? The answer is basically yes. You can play the game with your friend and add two more random players to your team if you wish. Otherwise, you can find two more players at GameTree. There are no PvP or other game modes, and they are not planned at the moment.

Game Experience On Different Platforms

The Helldivers 2 game looks great on both PS5 and PC. Half of my friends, like me, play on PS5, and some of them also play on PC. We didn’t have any problems connecting to one session from both platforms. Just choose the platform that is more convenient for you to play on. The first few weeks, there were problems with matchmaking, the servers couldn’t handle it, and it was simply impossible to enter the game sometimes. Yet, these problems have already been fixed, and the capacity of the servers has increased. Overall, there are no significant problems or differences between the platforms for Helldivers 2, the game is a great multiplayer for PS5 as well as PC users.

Things I Particularly Loved About Helldivers 2

I could just say that I LOVE this game and end this review. Yet, my editor told me I need to share some features, so, let’s do it.

The most important and fundamental thing for me is the chic and addictive Helldivers 2 gameplay, as well as the pleasant visual style and sound. I’m amazed by the attention to detail and high-resolution textures. Air support looks impressive – both various air strikes and orbital bombardment. When you call a napalm strike, it does not just spawn in the marked zone after a certain time. I see an aircraft approaching, which is drawn in detail, and it’s fantastic! In the same way, the orbital bombardment occurs from my ship, which is hanging in low orbit, and not just from nowhere in the sky.

There are many such little things in the Helldivers co-op game, and you will definitely make video cuts from your forays more than once and share them with friends or post on social media. I usually don’t often use video recording or screenshots, but I do in this game. After gaming sessions, we often share bright highlights and laugh together. Half of my console’s memory is filled with videos of funny moments from our games, and it’s heart-melting. 

I was also pleasantly surprised that, while doing side quests, I could find credits to buy weapons and skins that were actually in the store. You can easily get enough free credits to buy whatever you want. 

And one more thing… the hugs! You’ve probably already read about the hugging in other Helldivers 2 reviews, but honestly, it makes the game so cute!

Things I Didn’t Enjoy That Much

I can’t say that there are any things in the game that I didn’t like. The only drawback is that there may be technical problems with matchmaking, although most of them have been resolved. The game also needs a balance of guns and fixes to the armor. At the very beginning of the game, you can unlock the most powerful weapon, which is not expensive and has the highest damage. Thus, everything else is practically useless. Also, at the moment, there is no point in running in heavy or medium armor since it does not work. In my opinion, balance and lack of fresh content after almost a month of continuous play (the Helldivers 2 release date was February 8, 2024) are the only key issues the game has at the moment.

Definitely, and there’s nothing to add here in my Helldivers 2 review. You should not pass by if you like good action games and the opportunity to run around with friends. Helldivers 2 is one of the best games of 2024 and will definitely make itself known loudly more than once. If you have not yet launched the game, I highly recommend that you gather a team of friends or call someone from GameTree and enjoy the gameplay.
