  • Apex ranked mode is a competitive mode for similarly ranked players, accessible from level 20.
  • Seasons are divided into 2 splits of about 2 months, with ranks reset at each split.
  • Ranked points (RP) determine progression; RP is needed to start a ranked match.
  • RP is earned based on match performance, including placement, kills, and assists.
  • Recent changes focus on competitive matchmaking, preventing rank boosting by limiting teams to within three ranks.
  • There are 8 Apex ranks with 4 divisions each, except Apex Predator.

Apex Legends is one of the most popular competitive hero shooters, and it shows no signs of losing popularity and relevance. Respawn regularly changes the game, not only delighting us with new content but also changing the ranking system to keep it fresh and relevant. In May 2024, Apex Legends Season 21 was released, and some changes occurred as well. So, I decided to write this article about the Apex ranked system and closely examine how it works now.

Apex Legends Ranked Mode At A Glance

The Apex ranked mode is a competitive mode where similarly ranked players compete against each other to win and rank up. Players are matched to approximately the same skill level based on their current rank in order to ensure fairer and more competitive matches. To access the ranked mode, you must be level 20 or higher.

Image from EA Help: Official Support Website

In Apex Legends, the ranked system is tied to seasons and at the end of the season, players receive ranked rewards. Each season is divided into two splits, which last approximately two months each. At the beginning of each season split, the Apex ranks are reset to zero. The progress of each account is determined by rank points (RP), and to start a ranked match, you must deposit a certain amount of RP, which will depend on your current rank. Players who play for the first time start with 1 RP, and if there was already a rank in the last split, then the player starts from the reset point determined by the previous rank – that is, the rank is softly reset to zero.

About The Latest Updates and Changes

The previous season had many changes and balance tweaks, one of which was related to the Apex ranked system. Yet, there have been no major changes in the new 21st season. The ranking point calculation remains unchanged as in the previous season. The developers added minor updates that they did not manage to implement in Season 20.

The main changes to the Apex ranked mode in Season 21 affected matchmaking. Players on a team that want to queue for a ranked match must be within three ranks. This is intended to prevent rank boosting, where a higher-ranked player takes a lower-ranked friend into a game, thereby helping them rank up. Limiting the spread of ranks in an Apex match will make the games more fair, giving both teams the same chance of winning.

All Apex Legends Ranks In Order

The Apex ranking system consists of 8 ranks and has 4 divisions, except for the highest rank, Apex Predator. Players must complete each division to advance to the next rank.

What Is RP In Apex Legends?

Ranked Points are points that a player receives for winning and spends for participating in a ranked game. RP characterizes a player’s progress in rank.

RP Distribution During Matches

RP is awarded to players after each match and depends on their performance. The amount of RP received depends on the place taken at the end of the match, as well as on kills and assists. You can learn more about the Apex ranked distribution below.

112526

How To Earn More RP?

In order to get more RP, you obviously need to play well and take high places in the match results – to be at least in the top 5. Kills and assists will additionally bring RP, and it will also be a bonus if you eliminate a player of a higher rank than you in the match. If you are among the top 5 players in several matches in a row, you will receive +10 RP for each winning streak extension. The maximum bonus is 40 RP.

RP Entry Fees

When playing ranked games, a certain amount of RP is withdrawn for each match, which depends on your current rank in Apex. To help you understand better, I have compiled the table below:

RankRP Entry Cost

Silver20
Gold40
Platinum60

How Does The Apex Ranking System Affect Matchmaking?

Matchmaking is based on current ranking points (RP). The system matches players in the lobby with players of similar rank. This does not mean that there will be players of the same rank as you in every match, but there will be players who are not very far from your rank. A similar restriction applies to teams. You may be in a lobby with friends of other ranks, but only if you are within three ranks from each other. A Platinum player will not meet a Bronze player in the lobby; the same applies to a team of players. This way, the matches should be fairer.

What Ranks Can Play Together Apex?

To maintain competitive balance while still allowing friends of different skill levels to play together, Apex Legends implements rules about which ranks can team up in ranked play. The following table outlines these rank compatibilities:

RankCan Play With
RookieRookie, Bronze, Silver
BronzeRookie, Bronze, Silver
SilverRookie, Bronze, Silver, Gold

Rewards To Expect For Each Of Apex Ranks

Respawn has announced that the Apex ranked reward system will return to its previous model. In Season 21, players who reach the same rank in both season splits will receive an animated badge, while players with different ranks will receive a static badge based on their higher rank in the split. The developers’ goal is to make both splits equally valuable to players.

When Does The New Apex Season Start?

Season 20 will start on February 13, 2024, at 10 am PT / 1 pm ET / 6 pm GMT. We already have a confirmed date, which adheres to the rule that new seasons usually start on Tuesdays at 10 am PT / 6 pm GMT, so no changes here.

Everything We Know About The New Apex Season

Now that we know the Apex new season release date, let’s also see some of its features that have been uncovered. In particular, changes in the balance of heroes are planned. In addition, we expect new skins (Epic and Legendary), changes in the operation of armor, and the addition of Legendary perks to armor. There are also rumors about the appearance of a new hero, weapons, and map. Next, I will tell you in more detail about all the changes that await us. Seams like season 20 will bring a lot of new things to the game.

Challenges To Unlock Legends For Free

In Apex Legends’ new season, challenges are planned to unlock Legends for free. Players will have two weeks to complete tasks and unlock heroes.

The release order will be approximately as follows:

  • Seer (Feb 13-27);
  • Fuse (Feb 27 – Mar 12);
  • Rampart (Mar 12-28);
  • Mad Maggie (Mar 28 – Apr 8);
  • Loba (Apr 8-23);
  • Valkyrie (Apr 23 – May 7).

No New Legend This Season

Hate to disappoint you, but no new legends will be introduced in season 20.

Data miners dug up information that it is possible that the next Apex Legend, Cave, will be waiting for us in the new season. Even though this has not yet been confirmed, the game fans have already taken it to Reddit, and are eagerly discussing the new legend.

Also, according to playtesters’ leaks, he will have the ability “to teleport through walls with portals.” Probably, this would be a type of Phase Breach ability that allows Cave and his teammates to phase through walls and buildings. This ability would work as a countermeasure against controller legends such as Catalyst and Wattson, who have the ability to easily secure buildings.

Unfortunately, all of those turned out to be just a speculation, as EA has not mentioned any of this information in their article on Breakout updates.

The New Map

According to various rumors and teasers, it is assumed that there will be a new District map in the Apex new season. This map will be located in Suotamo, Crypto’s former city of residence. Suotamo is one of the largest cities in the Outlands, and whenever it was depicted, it had a cyberpunk neon look.

In addition, the district is not only closely related to Crypto but is also located on the planet Gaea, which is also the home planet of Ballistic, Caustic, and Rampart. All of this seems to be true, and it could indeed be a new map, as we know that Respawn likes to update maps related to the lore and characters of the game.

Unfortunately, these speculations have not been confirmed, and now we actually know that this map won’t be introduced (at least in the Breakout season). However, what has been confirmed is the fact, that we’ll get a new Mixtape map – Thunderstorm.

Thunderstorm – new Mixtape map

Thunderdome is a new map being added to Apex Legends in the Mixtape rotation. It is based on the original Thunderdome location from Kings Canyon, but has been modernized and upgraded. This floating sky stadium arena is designed for fast-paced action across a variety of multiplayer modes like Team Deathmatch, Control, and Gun Run.

The map has three lanes to promote different gameplay strategies. Fans can battle for the high ground in TDM, fight to control points in Control, or find power positions for an advantage in Gun Run. The map was created to support many different playstyles and counter some commonly used tactics.

Overall, Thunderdome brings back the essence of a classic Apex arena with a modern twist. Players can expect intense, dynamic matches on this map with opportunities for creative strategies. Even if you lose, the energetic virtual crowd keeps the energy up. Thunderdome looks to be a thrilling new addition to the Apex Legends mix that both long-time fans and newcomers will enjoy.

Apex Ranked System Change

According to leaks, there is insider information that in the Apex next season, there will be a return to the rank system of the 12th or 13th seasons. The exact details of ranked rewards and the matchmaking system are still unknown. And this one has been confirmed, guys!

Here are the key changes coming to Apex Legends Ranked mode in the Breakout season:

  • Level requirement reduced to 20, splits and season reset returning.
  • Scoring now emphasizes eliminations over placements. No cap on elimination scoring.
  • New bonuses for top 5 placement streaks and beating higher ranked players.
  • Matchmaking based on RP rank rather than tiers.
  • Tier promotions and provisional matches removed. Some RP requirements increased.
Next Apex Season gameplay

Overall, Ranked will be reverting back to a more familiar system for players. The goal is to put more focus on skills like getting kills and wins rather than just placement. The updates aim to make scoring more transparent and competitive. Players will need to continue honing their skills to climb ranks in the revamped system.

Legend Upgrades

Legend upgrades is probably the biggest upgrade that will be introduced this season, and here’s what we can expect:

  • Players will now earn EVO points during a match by dealing damage, getting knockdowns, using abilities, etc.
  • Earning enough EVO will level up your legend, improving their armor and unlocking new upgrades at levels 2 and 3.
  • You get to choose which upgrades to unlock, allowing you to customize your legend’s abilities.
  • Body shields are removed. Instead legends have inherent armor that levels up via EVO. It is fueled by a Shield Core with health that can be swapped.
  • New EVO Harvesters spawn on the map, allowing squads to get EVO boosts.
  • EVO Caches are new rare items with EVO that give a full level up.

Overall, the new Legend Upgrade system should allow for more customization and progression during a match. Players can tailor their legend’s loadout to their preferred playstyle. It adds more strategy around harvesting EVO and leveling up your squad.

Changes In Armor And Perks

“When does the new apex season come out?” is not the only question fans ask. They are also intrigued by the balance and armor changes. So, in Season 20, the armor will not spawn on the ground. There will be only the armor with which you appear on the map. That is, the randomness is removed when you land in white armor and your enemy is already in purple. For example, you have blue armor for 75 HP; you kill the enemy and take their purple armor, and you should have a 100 HP shield. Yet, 75 HP of yours remains, and 25 HP will be temporary. As soon as they are broken, you will have blue armor again. Thus, you will constantly upgrade your armor and only occasionally receive temporary additional shields.

Next Season Apex Armor

Another key feature of the Apex new season is that the armor will have legendary perks. When you upgrade your armor from white to blue, you can choose one of two perks that will last until the end of the match. Having upgraded the armor from blue to purple, you choose perks again, and so on, every time you upgrade the armor. The perks will be very different: a quick rollback of a tactical skill or ults, illumination of potions and grenades, and so on – that is, everything that players tested in the 19th season.

New Skins And Battle Pass Updates

Is the new Apex season out? No, not yet, but we already know about the future skins and events. You can familiarize yourself with the list of new skins for Legends below.

  • Legendary skins will be for Wattson, Valkyrie, Seer, Pathfinder, Mirage, Fuse, Crypto, Catalyst;
  • Epic Skins will be for Ballistic and Bloodhound (and more to come);
  • Epic Weapon Skins for R99, Prowler, Car SMG;
  • Lunar New Year for Season 20 will likely be a store event (Legendary Skins for Catalyst, Crypto, and Seer).
  • Reactive Flatline Weapon Recolor is coming in the Apex new season.

We also already know about some major events in Season 20. Here are their code names and some information about them:

  • Outurban A – Battle Pass.
  • Outurban B – Collection Event. It should contain a Mythic skin for Octane (not confirmed) and legendary skins for Newcastle, Wraith, Vantage (and more).
  • Outbeast – probably a store event. This event has no legendary skins listed at the moment. There will be Epic skins for Mirage, Vantage, Valkyrie, Newcastle + Pathfinder Rare Skin.
  • Outnoir – Collection Event. It will feature a Noir-themed collection event. Outnoir will bring themed legendary skins for Bloodhound, Ballistic, Mad Maggie, Revenant, Lifeline, and Horizon.
Legend Skins From The New Apex Season

Changes In Balance of Two Legends

The developers plan to change some of the abilities of Ash and Crypto when the new Apex season is launched. In particular, the developers consider Ash’s ultimate ability too weak. Thus, she will likely get the following buffs:

  • Adjustment to Phase Tear;
  • Slight improvements to tactical stats;
  • Quality of life QoL changes to passive.

The developers are concerned that Ash may suffer the same fate as Seer. Seer was initially a popular character, used frequently in gameplay, but eventually fell to the bottom of the pick rate and was no longer chosen by players. To avoid this scenario with Ash, the developers are exploring different options to make her stronger and more actively chosen by players.

The same plans for Crypto: they also want to redevelop him, namely diversify the capabilities. His likely buffs for the Apex new season are:

  • Improved/altered drone handling;
  • Streamlining of abilities.

By the way, we’ve recently covered a list of the best legends in Apex, and Crypto turned out to be one of the weakest characters, let’s see how this changes with the new season.

No New Weapons

No new weapons will be introduced this season. The process of releasing new weapons has slowed down over the years, as the Apex developers clearly did not want to oversaturate the loot pool or mess around too much with the meta and long balance. However, there are four currently rumored and leaked weapons waiting for release in Apex Legends. The weapons that players might see coming in future seasons are Gemini (energy SMG), Scorpion Crossbow, dual-wield Fanatics (energy Pistol), and Malestrom (light LMG).

Technical Updates

There were rumors, and now there’s a confirmation, that the game would get a new engine, but the developers decided to finish the current one, and there are no plans to switch to a new one. Also, an update for consoles should be released this season, and players will be able to play the game in 120 fps mode when the next Apex season starts.

Other Rumors And Speculations

I have some disappointing news to share, according to the information that we now have from the developers, the Apex new season is going to be quite ordinary. We now know that there won’t be any new weapons, maps, or heroes introduced this season. We may have to wait until Season 21 to see any of these additions.

So, when is the new season of Apex? 13 February 2024, so get ready There is already some confirmed information about what can be expected in the season, but it is too early to draw any conclusions. We can definitely say that there will be new content and pleasant bonuses for players. We already know for sure that there will be new Legendary and Epic skins, and some major ranked system upgrades. And the game’s 5-year anniversary is ahead, surely, the developers have some other surprises in store for the Apex Legends new season. We’ll see!

Best Legends In Apex Legends Season 23 Tier List

In Apex Legends, choosing one of the 26 unique playable characters (Legends) is an exciting part of the gaming experience. Each Legend has different abilities and playstyles, influencing which one a player chooses.

In Season 16, the class system was overhauled and Legends were placed into 5 new classes. Paying attention to the classes can help guide your Legend selection.

In the new season, Legend upgrades were introduced. Now all Legends have 4 upgradable abilities, but players can only select 2 upgrades to use per match. The upgrades build on existing abilities, so the Legend’s overall playstyle doesn’t change dramatically. Leveling up unlocks upgrades which can make a trio stronger.

NOTE:

This tier list tries to rank the Legends based on how good they are. But you shouldn’t just stick to the top Legends. Instead, try out different Legends and see which ones are the most fun for you to play. The most important thing is enjoying the game and finding a Legend that fits your style really well.

I’ve created an Apex Legends tier for season 23 list from strongest to weakest. After exploring the table below and the article, you’ll know exactly which top Apex Legends are most effective for ranking up in Season 23. The meta changes frequently as new tactics and ways to play are constantly being discovered.

TierLegends
SAlter, Bloodhound, Horizon, Wraith, Gibraltar, Pathfinder
AAsh, Valkyrie, Caustic, Revenant, Lifeline, Octane, Catalyst, Bangalore
BWattson, Conduit, Newcastle, Fuse, Seer, Vantage
CRampart, Mad Maggie, Crypto, Ballistic, Loba
DMirage

Any Legend can be effective if practiced with, even low-tier ones. Having the right weapons matters too. But some Legends are ranked higher than others for competitive play. This list provides an overall ranking of the best Legends to have on your squad.

S-Tier

These Legends are a must-have pick for any team composition, as they have virtually no serious drawbacks. At this level, we have four best Legends in Apex.

Alter

Apex Legends has introduced a new Skirmisher Legend, Alter, who possesses a formidable set of abilities that have made her an immensely powerful addition to the game. Like many newly released Legends, Alter’s capabilities are currently perceived as OP, granting her and her team unparalleled mobility that allows them to disregard the area denial abilities of most Controller Legends, with the exception of Caustic.

Notably, Alter’s skill set not only facilitates her team’s ability to initiate and disengage from engagements at will, but she also excels in solo play, as evidenced by her impressive performance in the game’s Solo Mode. This versatility has positioned Alter as a potent option for both entry fragging and anchoring in Ranked matches.

Alter’s well-rounded strengths have led many players to consider her the most powerful Legend in Apex Legends at present, at least until the developers at Respawn Entertainment implement nerfs to balance her abilities. Her dominance in the current meta is undeniable.

Bloodhound

Bloodhound is the right character for tracking down enemy teams and providing your team with information on a regular basis.

Bloodhound is ideal for aggressive play as they can gather a lot of information about opponents.

Bloodhound is the right character for tracking down enemy teams and providing your team with information on a regular basis. The ability to withstand Bangalore’s Smoke by highlighting enemies and increased movement speed make Bloodhound one of the best Legends in Apex for team play and flight coordination.

Horizon

Horizon is the best Apex Legend for controlling territories and vertical movement.

Horizon can reach locations inaccessible to others due to her aerial prowess. You can use her feature on enemies, leaving them trapped, making them easy targets, or moving them against their will.

Horizon’s increased mobility in the air makes her a serious threat and a nightmare for less skilled players. Her ultimate ability, in the right hands, can destroy an entire squad.

Horizon is the best Apex Legend for controlling territories and vertical movement. In close combat, the Black Hole ability can give your team a chance to push enemies or more time to hold them.

Wraith

Wraith is the most enduring Legend

Wraith is the most enduring Legend and perhaps the only hero in the game that avoids the inevitability of death better than Octane. Wraith can easily get out of any fight. This is how she maintains her place at the top of the rankings, even though so many new heroes were added recently. Also, in Season 19, her passive skills were strengthened, which made her a desired pick for me.

Gibraltar

Gibraltar is the best Apex Legends character for a tank position.

Gibraltar is the best Apex Legends character for a tank position. He is able to withstand more damage than most other heroes, as well as protect your team from enemy abilities. His ultimate ability, Defensive Bombardment, is very good in open space, and Dome Shield can save you and your entire team.

Unfortunately, Gibraltar can be an easy target due to his large hitbox, and his features have a long cooldown, requiring the player to have a steady hand.

Support heroes are the basis of your squad, and Gibraltar has gained a new role in teams thanks to the many buffs the developers have put on him. Though Gibraltar is not picked that often in low-level games, he becomes a must-have attribute in high-level ranked games.

Pathfinder

Pathfinder is a nice movement Legend.

Pathfinder is a nice movement Legend. His Zipline Ultimate works similarly to Wraith’s portal, helping your team get out of tight situations or access hard-to-reach areas. For sure, enemies can also use it, so you’d better monitor the situation and be on your guard.

Pathfinder excels at both getting in and out of combat, but his large hitbox is a drawback, as it is easy to hit for your enemy when they can still see you.

A-Tier

These Legends are exceptionally good in their roles. However, they may have one or two flaws that prevent them from being in the S tier. In this category, we have ten characters.

Ash

Ash is among the best legends in Apex in her category overall.

Ash is among the best legends in Apex in her category overall. She can provide intelligence through death boxes, which will give you a tactical advantage. She can also actively participate in battles thanks to her snare ability and can successfully take out your team with her rift-slicing ultimate.

Phase Breach is a good way to push or escape your command, but it doesn’t have any benefit since you can’t walk back through it. Ash’s Arc Snare is not that useful usually but can stress out enemies when used correctly. Although Ash is not the best Legend in Apex compared to many other heroes, in the right hands, she can become very useful in a team.

Valkyrie

Valkyrie is the best Apex Legend in the A tier,

Valkyrie is the right Legend for hunting enemies or getting out of dangerous situations. Her Skyward Dive allows your team to change position very quickly and scout at the same time. However, with the Evac Tower, Valkyrie’s ultimate ability is no longer as effective as before.

Her main passive ability, jetpacks, allows Valkyrie to reach almost any point on the map and instantly rise to high ground. Still, they have a significant drawback: they are very loud, and you cannot fire weapons when using a jetpack.

However, with the ability to instantly rotate your entire squad and easily grab the high ground in any situation, Valkyrie becomes a desirable pick. If you wonder what is the best Apex Legend in the A tier, you may try Valkyrie.

Caustic

Caustic is one of the Apex Legends best characters.

Caustic is a good defensive Legend. His Nox Gas Trap tactical ability can help your team lock down a building. His ultimate ability can force the enemy team to step back and give your team time to recover and regroup.

The developers buffed this hero, then nerfed and strengthened him again, and in an organized team and capable hands, Caustic is very strong. Since his Gas is now way more dangerous, a skilled Caustic player can greatly strengthen your team. So, when assembling a team with other players at GameTree, you should consider adding Caustic to your squad as one of the Apex Legends best characters.

Revenant

Revenant is a strong movement Legend

Revenant is a strong movement Legend that can track down vulnerable enemies and is especially effective on vertical maps. Assassin’s Instinct allows him to rise high and get around the enemy. Shadow Pounce is about quickly jumping long distances forward to get closer to weak enemies or quickly turn around.

The Forged Shadows ultimate ability gives Revenant full damage protection for a short time, excluding fire, gas, or ring damage. Enemies can destroy this defense by damaging it, but it will instantly recharge if Revenant is knocked down. Even with some minor mid-season nerfs Revenant is a great pick.

Lifeline

Lifeline is still one of the best Legends in Apex to have on your team.

Lifeline is a great choice as a support Legend and can be the savior of your team, thanks to her support abilities.

Although her shield has been removed, and teammates are now unprotected when revived by the Drone, Lifeline can still revive two players at once while she continues to fight. In addition, her drone now heals faster, at a rate of 8 health points per second. Lifeline can also create banners of fallen teammates, meaning you never have to be a player down.

Lifeline’s ultimate ability has also been significantly improved, as it now guarantees dropping an upgrade to your gear. The ability to grab Legendary or Epic gear can be a deciding factor in many Apex matches, and Lifeline is still one of the best Legends in Apex to have on your team.

Octane

Octane is not the best Legend in Apex as he is only useful occasionally

Octane can be a strong Legend and a great addition to a team with other movement Legends. He can run very fast using his stims. However, his stims will now damage you for 20 health points (instead of the 12 health points previously), so you need to be a little more careful when using them. The cooldown is now also reduced, meaning you can spam the stim boost again almost instantly, but you’ll need to keep an eye on your health levels at all times.

Octane’s Jump Pad can help your team reach otherwise inaccessible areas, but you can be shot in the air. Octane is a nice pick for aggressive gamers, as they can move in and out of combat easily. But in general, Octane is not the best Legend in Apex as he is only useful occasionally.

Catalyst

Catalyst is a good defensive hero

Catalyst is a good defensive hero who is also at her best in the late game due to her ability to fortify doors, making it easy to lock down an area inside the ring. Although her ultimate Catalyst Dark Veil is difficult to use, it can be effective, helping you escape from enemies or push away the opposing team.

Overall, Catalyst has a strong set of defensive abilities but is not easy to master for an average player. In my opinion, there are easier-to-use Legends that can often be more effective.

Bangalore

Bangalore is one of the best Legends for ranked Apex.

Bangalore is the most balanced Legend with an easy-to-learn and effective set of abilities. Rolling Thunder can be good both offensively and defensively. Bangalore’s passive ability allows her to move very quickly when being shot. The Smoke feature is one of the most versatile abilities among all the best Legends for ranked Apex. Even with the nerfs this season, Bangalore is still a great pick.

B-Tier

The best Legends in Apex from the B tier are excellent choices that can be very useful in the hands of experienced players and in certain situations. Still, they lack a level of utility. In this tier, we have four Legends.

Wattson

Watson is a strong defensive Legend and one of the best Apex Legends characters for holding territory late in the game.

Watson is a strong defensive Legend and one of the best Apex Legends characters for holding territory late in the game. Perimeter Security and Intercept Pylon can block a building and counter the ultimate features of many other heroes. Wattson’s kit can significantly buff the team’s play on defense.

Conduit

Conduit is a promising Apex Legends hero

Conduit is a new Legend for Season 19. Her tactical Radiant Transfer ability gives temporary shields to your team members, which can save your squad in intense battles. Her passive features make it easier to stay in the team due to the speed boost. Her ultimate ability, Energy Barricade, can be a great way to lock down an area to protect your team or trap the enemy team and prevent them from attacking. Overall, Conduit is a promising hero.

Newcastle

Newcastle is arguably the best Legend in Apex to support the team

Newcastle is arguably the best Legend in Apex to support the team. Castle Wall and Mobile Shield are good tactical abilities that can save your team in various situations. Mobile Shield can also be useful for reconnaissance and surveillance of the enemy team. Newcastle’s abilities can be used both to protect the team and to push the enemy. In general, this balanced hero can be used both as a support and for aggression.

Fuse

Fuse is a good Legend for assault.

Fuse is a good Legend for assault. His Knuckle Clusters can hold an area, and he also has a large supply of ammo and more space for grenades. When used correctly, his ultimate ability can be effective in area control and capturing the enemy. This hero will be an excellent addition to the team when pushing the rivals.

Seer

Seer is a great scouting Legend

Seer is a great scouting Legend that can provide useful information for your team. His ultimate ability gives your team constant information about where the enemy is. He is also capable of interrupting any enemy’s abilities and healing. Due to nerfs in Season 18, Seer has become less viable than other Intelligence Legends, such as Bloodhound. However, this hero requires aggressive play on your part, and Seer’s lack of escape ability means he requires a lot of skill from the player.

Vantage

Vantage is a sniper and is great for long-range combat.

Vantage is a sniper and is great for long-range combat. Her abilities, Spotter’s Lens and Sniper’s Mark, give her an advantage in sniper fights, marking enemies so that teammates can do extra damage to them. Her Echo Relocation is a good movement ability, allowing her to move a significant distance both horizontally and vertically. Playing as Vantage ensures that you can provide great assistance to your team from almost any range, making you a fearsome opponent. However, Vantage should avoid melee.

C-Tier

The C-level Apex best Legends can be useful in certain situations. These are fine and useful heroes, but as a rule, they require a high level of skill from the player. Once mastered, these Legends perform extremely well in their specific niches. Yet, there are often better choices for less experienced players. Overall, there are five Legends in the C tier.

Rampart

Rampart can significantly impact team play

Rampart provides an interesting combination of offense and defense with her ability to deploy mobile fortifications during combat. Rampart is a difficult Legend to master but is extremely effective in the hands of a skilled player.

Rampart’s ultimate abilities were strengthened after the changes, and she can now move with her machine gun, which makes her more durable. With well-coordinated teamwork and strong player skills, Rampart can significantly impact team play.

Mad Maggie

Maggie's passive ability gives her an advantage over other best Legends in Apex.

Mad Maggie is a nice moving Legend if used correctly. Her ultimate ability, Wrecking Ball, gives your team a good movement speed boost and allows you to move in and out of combat. The tactical ability, Riot Drill, can push enemies out of cover. Maggie’s passive ability, Warlord’s Ire, gives her an advantage over other best Legends in Apex due to her increased movement speed with shotguns. Maggie is a meta character and a great alternative to other aggressive Legends, such as Wraith, Bloodhound, and Octane.

Crypto

Crypto is too weak and difficult to play.

The problem that has plagued Crypto since his introduction is that you become detached from your character, essentially being AFK all the time in order to properly use his abilities. Drone EMP can do a lot of damage and give your team a good chance to continue the fight. His passive ability is useful for transferring information about the enemy to your team, but he lacks distance and is easy to take down.

Experienced Crypto fans can certainly put on a good game, but for most players, and me in particular, he is too weak and difficult to play.

Ballistic

Ballistic is one of the best Apex Legends characters due to his versatile abilities.

Ballistic is still a fairly new Legend, but he has already established himself as one of the best Apex Legends characters due to his versatile abilities.

His ultimate ability will upgrade the third weapon to a gold version, as well as grant nearby teammates extra mobility, faster reload speed and infinite ammo for a while. If you correctly balance your abilities, Ballistic can be extremely effective on the battlefield. However, his tactical and passive abilities are quite easy to counter.

Ballistic is also the only character who can carry three types of weapons, although without the ability to install attachments.

Loba

Loba is the most useful in the endgame,

Loba is also a situational hero as she can be most useful in the endgame, where her Black Market Boutique will allow your squad to access required loot in a small circle. Outside of this role, she offers little to the team, although regular access to loot can provide a tactical advantage. She also has a movement ability, Burglar’s Best Friend, which adds to her mobility since it is a teleporter.

D-Tier

D-tier Legends are not the best choice of heroes and perform poorly in most situations. These characters have abilities that can be avoided or easily countered. They provide little benefit to your team and are overshadowed by the best Legends in Apex.

Mirage

Mirage can be a nice choice in certain situations, but his abilities do not significantly impact victory.

Mirage can be a nice choice in certain situations, but his abilities do not significantly impact victory. Thanks to his Now You See Me passive ability, he can be useful to your team on respawns, but his decoys are easy to spot. His ultimate ability will rarely allow you to escape from a skilled enemy. Do you wonder what is the best Legend in Apex? It’s definitely not Mirage as he is the weakest Legend in the game and is not a proper choice for most situations.

Connect With Like-Minded Gamers Through GameTree.Me

As I wrote above in the article, there are many Legends in the game, and your task is to assemble a team with a balance of active and passive abilities of each hero to play in synergy. If you don’t rely on in-game matchmaking to play with random players every time, but in your own team, you better understand everyone’s abilities and playstyle and can analyze battles. Deriving from my experience, this gives you a big advantage and allows you to win more often.

Get your team together to play Apex Legends on GameTree and level up your skills with a well-balanced squad! This app is perfect for video game enthusiasts who want to connect with other fans of Apex Legends. You can find players to join you in the game, chat with them while you play, and improve your skills by playing with a team that complements your own strengths.

Final Thoughts

So, who is the best Legend in Apex Legends? In fact, there’s no answer to this question. The game has many very effective characters, some of them are more difficult to master than others. To better get used to Apex Legends, the choice for new players would be Bloodhound, Wraith, Octane, or Lifeline. These heroes have both strong and relatively easy-to-use abilities, and, as a result, they will be easier to master. However, I still recommend trying all the best Apex Legends characters. There is always a chance that you will be able to better reveal the abilities of a certain hero, even if they are not in the meta. Remember that the developers are trying to make all heroes balanced.

Get ready for some massive ranked changes in Apex Legends folks. After tons of feedback from the community, it looks like Respawn is finally overhauling the ranked system to make it way more fair and rewarding.

As a big fan of Apex Legends, I’m thrilled to tell you more about its skill-based matchmaking. Apex Legends is one of the most popular battle royale games right now. To match players of almost the same skill level for a battle, there’s the Apex matchmaking system, which is kind of controversial.

However, many gamers complain about the unfair system and long queues of players waiting in the lobby to start a battle. So, in this article, I decided to dive into the Apex Legends SBMM and explain how it works.

Apex Matchmaking Season 20 Updates

First up, matchmaking will now be based mainly on a revamped RP system rather than MMR. This should expand the player pool you get matched with as long as your RP levels are similar. Queue times should be lower too.

At the start of the season, your rank will be completely reset with no provisional matches. Mid-season splits are also back, dropping your rank by 6 tiers. This will keep progression moving along nicely.

Now, for the juicy parts. Kills and combat are going to be weighted much more heavily in the new RP scoring. We’re talking up to 26 RP for a win and 12 RP per kill in the top 10. High risk, high reward baby!

Placement RP is still a factor but to a lesser extent. Expect 0 RP for 14th-20th place and capped at 125 RP for a win. Here’s a more detailed list:

  • 20th-14th: 0
  • 13th-11th: 5
  • 10th-9th: 10
  • 8th-7th: 20
  • 6th: 30
  • 5th: 45
  • 4th: 55
  •  3rd: 70
  • 2nd: 95
  • 1st: 125

To maximize gains, focus on combat RP through kills/assists, bonus RP by taking out higher ranks and streaks, and placement RP as the cherry on top.

Overall, these changes sound great to me. Way more emphasis on fighting and skills, less camping for placement. But is it so in reality?

Community Feedback on the New Matchmaking System

Many Apex Legends players feel that matchmaking has made the game unplayable in recent seasons. Despite hopes that Season 20 would improve the skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) system, public matches still suffer from skill disparities after two weeks, frustrating players.

On the Apex Legends subreddit, and on EA feedback pages, users complain of unfair matchups solo queuing against premade stacked teams, especially higher ranked players stomping on lower tiers due to SBMM issues.

  • Players find it extremely frustrating getting matched with random teammates who hot drop, die quickly, and leave, ruining the experience. Being consistently paired with such teammates makes the game feel unplayable.
  • Most casual players have stopped playing trios and duos modes, instead playing Apex’s rotating Mixtape modes like Gun Run and Control which have more randomized matchmaking.

Apex Legends: Matchmaking Update 2024

On December 18th 2024, Apex Legends™ has introduced a new matchmaking system designed to enhance gameplay by pairing players of similar skill levels. This system moves beyond traditional metrics like Kill/Death Ratio (KDR) to assess player performance more comprehensively. A key component of this update is Continuous Window Matchmaking (CWMM), a dynamic system that adapts to real-time player populations, balancing queue times and skill disparities to ensure fair matches across various game modes.

In addition to CWMM, bespoke changes have been implemented to tailor skill assessments for different game modes. For instance, in smaller team modes, damage output over multiple matches is a significant factor in determining skill, while Battle Royale modes utilize a Matchmaking Rating (MMR) that considers squad eliminations and placements relative to opponents’ skills. Ranked matches now correlate player skill with Ranked Points (RP), addressing previous concerns about mismatched skill levels in rank-based lobbies. Adjustments such as RP resets and provisional matches are being refined to reduce skill-mixing and improve the overall ranked experience.

Transparency and player engagement are central to these updates. The addition of pre-match skill displays in ranked modes helps players understand the range of skills in their lobbies, reflecting the developers’ commitment to listening to community feedback and continually refining matchmaking to meet players’ expectations. The overarching goal is to provide a balanced experience where players can hone their skills while facing appropriate challenges, fostering a mix of outcomes that encourages growth and competition. The development team remains dedicated to improving matchmaking systems, fostering trust, and maintaining open communication with the community to ensure the game remains both fair and enjoyable.

Does Apex Have Skill-Based Matchmaking?

Yes, as we’ve mentioned, there’s a matchmaking system in the game. The Apex SBMM works to ensure that there’s no big gap between the skills of players in the lobby. My first matches in the game were quite easy, but as I improved my skills, I got a better rank. So, I was put into squads with similarly skilled players.

What Is Matchmaking Exactly?

The whole Apex skill-based matchmaking may seem complicated and simple at the same time, especially for newbies. So, below, I will tell you in more detail about the progression system, skill rating, and matching.

  • The progression system is a significant part of Apex Legends matchmaking. Players get rewarded by playing the game, which helps them feel like they’re improving. This system also keeps players engaged and leads to better matchmaking.
  • Skill Rating is a hidden numerical value assigned to a player based on their skill level in the game. It is determined by various factors that indicate a player’s ability to play the game. Skill rating distribution can be viewed in two ways – Continuous Gaussian distribution and Discrete Buckets. Apex Legends traditionally uses the bucket approach, but the developers say it is changing.
  • And finally, we come to the matchmaking itself. The Apex matching algorithm puts together who you’ll play with. It groups players based on their skill rating to form a match. The algorithm also considers player availability in real time.
Apex matchmaking went through major update

How Does Apex Matchmaking Work?

The Apex matchmaking algorithm selects 60 players of similar skill to form a fair match. The players can be divided into two types of teams:

  1. Balanced teams with a close average skill rating. This approach is used in Pubs.
  2. Teams with similarly skilled players. This approach is used in competitive environments like Ranked.

It’s important to note that while Apex Legends may stack teams in Ranked, they only select players who made it into the match and are, therefore, similarly skilled.

Calculating A Squad’s Effective Skill

The current Apex matchmaking system divides all players into four categories. The algorithm ranks users based on their win/loss streak and assigns a skill rating from 1 to 10. This score can change throughout the day based on successes and failures in matches.

Apex matchmaking system groups players into four categories

The system finds at least 60 players who have started searching for a match (this is true for both Ranked matches and Pubs). The selection of players occurs so that trios are added to the lobby first, then the duos, and only then singles are added. When distributing, the system only takes into account the skill rating of the strongest player in the group.

That is, if your friend’s level of play is lower than yours, then you will have to carry the team. Most of the opponents will be matched to your skill level and not the average of all players on both teams.

The situation with Apex SBMM changes a little if the selection of players occurs in squads one at a time. For example, in ranked matches, due to Apex ranked matchmaking, singles with ratings from 1 to 9 will be matched as close as possible to their rating. But in ordinary public matches, the Apex SBMM system strives to balance the squads, so there will be players with ratings of both 1 and 9 on one team.

Obviously, this approach makes life difficult for beginners. Since there are fewer of them than players with an average rating, low-rated users are often forced to play with more experienced opponents.

Apex Skill-Based Matchmaking Players’ Concerns And Complaints

Despite Respawn’s attempts to improve the Apex matchmaking algorithm and give players a better understanding of how matchmaking works, many are still very disappointed.

Some comments go like this:

no sbmm, it just rbmm (rigged base match making). only way to avoid it is just play with full friend squad (or friend duo). solo-q only lead you to carry the worst possible player……….with worst case of lag that cause hit reg fail.

While others say:

This isn’t overwatch. The matchmaking is fine.

And I couldn’t agree more, the matchmaking system here is not as bad as the one in Overwatch. Since players of the same level are selected, each match resembles a grand final, with players showing their best skills in order to win. This excludes a certain element of chance and fun. Popular streamers especially suffer from this since all live streamings become similar to each other, and there are no elements of randomness.

Another problem of Apex matchmaking is that the speed of selecting new and skilled players may be different.

Due to the algorithm, you need a well-coordinated team of friends to improve your skill and show a high level of play every time. Honestly, this is almost impossible if you play alone with random players.

Apex SBMM changes

The Future Of Apex Legends SBMM And Their New System

Now, with the Apex SBMM update, the algorithm will analyze not just the skill rating. The system calculates the player’s chances of winning against the opponents and selects players in the lobby so that the probability of winning would be close to 50% for each.

At the same time, the players are not pre-categorized – the algorithm selects gamers dynamically. In tests, the waiting time for matchmaking for players with a high skill level did not exceed 5 minutes. This approach should minimize the likelihood that the player will end up in a lobby with more experienced users.

Tired Of Playing Alone? Find People To Play Apex Legends With

While the Apex Legends matchmaking update is still being calibrated and isn’t as fair as I’d like, I have a lot more fun playing Apex Legends with my buddies rather than solo. If you also want to assemble a well-balanced team and kick in spectacular Apex Legends matches, I recommend that you find Apex teammates on GameTree.

This is an outstanding app for gamers where you can meet other players, agree to play together and discuss the latest news about Apex Legends and other games. It is a nice and non-toxic community where I find support, amusing conversations, and players for my dream squad. Give it a try!

Final Thoughts

Being one of the best Xbox and PS5 multiplayer battle royale projects with a large community and its own unique style, Apex Legends has managed to win hearts of the gamers all over the world. Online tournaments and regular updates from the developers and a large number of regular online players indicate that everything is fine for the game and its future. Despite minor problems with Apex ranked matchmaking, the development team is constantly working on improvements to make the algorithm fairer and the matches more fun.
